Jing Xia, with Paul Bendzsa

Jing Xia is a professional guzheng player and teacher from China. During her master study of music administration, she also acted as concert host and chairman secretary at the Hunan Symphony Orchestra (2015). Since moving to St. John’s, she has been an active performer in the city’s music scene and played with musicians from different traditions. As a Ph.D. ethnomusicology student, she is interested in fusion music combining Chinese traditional instruments with western genres, and the diasporic experience of overseas Chinese musicians. Her recent performance was playing guzheng with the popular Newfoundland rock band Shanneyganock at the George Street Festival (2017), and she is now exploring the connection of places and music, and the possibilities of transnational and intercultural communication through music.
